Jaylen

“There you are.” A feminine voice called out. “Take off on me, don’t return my calls. It’s pretty shitty to ghost your own sister, Jaylen.”

Keke.

Jaylen sat up on her pool chair, adjusting herself. She just wanted a nice comfortable nap for a while, maybe make sure she got enough vitamin D.

Of course, now her sister was standing there, blocking her sun. “How did you get in here, Keke?”

“How do you think?” Keke crossed her arms.

“Sleeping with the guards in front of the palace?”

“Haha. So funny. I’m going to tear something, Jay-Jay.” She shook her head. “You know how their idiots who just think I’m you.”

Jaylen sighed. It used to be that Keke would go out of her way to not take after the technically older twin. Recently though, she had been trying to play up their twinness. While not exactly copying Jaylen, it was enough that someone who didn’t know better would just think Jaylen changed her hair or forgot to put on makeup.

Being able to come and go as she pleased in the Sheikh’s palace was a nice little perk apparently, one that Jaylen suspected she cultivated on purpose.

“What do you want, Keke?”

“Who says I want anything?”

“Common sense says you want something.” The whole reason her sister followed her to Bahir was for the perks and an easier life. Jaylen used to take pride in helping Keke out even through her tough times, but sisterhood had definitely been tested by recent events.

Sleeping with another woman’s husband tended to do that.

“I want my sister back. Alright? Is that too selfish of me?”

“Then you shouldn’t have done what you did, Keke.”

“I told you I’m sorry. Besides, this is helping you.”

“How is betraying me helping me?” Jaylen was now sitting on the edge of the chair, her head in her hands as she dealt with the annoyance that was her sister.

Keke took a seat across from her in one of the neighboring chairs, the one Dhamar sat in during their better days. “I showed you exactly the kind of man Dhamar is. The kind you couldn’t trust.”

Jaylen grit her teeth. She didn’t want to hear this again. The past few months with him had been... good, but weird.

She couldn’t keep him away from her body, but she had kept her heart away. As much as they took one another, and as much as he tried to talk, staying silent through it all just did something weird to her mentally.

Forgiveness was something so very hard to do, and she still didn’t know if she had the strength to do that.

“I showed you what kind of man he is, Jaylen. Yet... well, you’re still here in the palace. I thought you were filing for divorce.”

The elder sister grit her teeth. “I did. Sort of. It’s complicated.”

Keke’s eyes shifted to her sister’s midsection. “And... uh... now you’re pregnant?”

“It’s complicated.”

“How can you being pregnant be complicated?”

“It just is, okay, Keke?” Why was she here all of a sudden? Yes, she did try to call her. E-mails. Messages.
